Spring has officially arrived, and with it, the familiar and frantic rhythm of the vineyard. We are thrilled to share that our first run of heavy pruning is complete. It is a labor-intensive process, but seeing the vines tidied and ready for the season is always a milestone worth celebrating.
Of course, this time of year keeps us all on high alert as we remain vigilant against a late-season frost that could threaten these delicate young buds. To mitigate this risk, we utilize a strategic two-step pruning method. By leaving extra buds on the plant during the initial pass, we create a natural safeguard; if a freeze occurs, these outer buds take the hit first, allowing the secondary buds a better chance to survive and open safely.
Beyond the existing rows, there is big news right in front of the winery. We are currently prepping the field to plant Cabernet Franc, a project that will finally fill the remaining tillable land on our estate. This planting is more than just an expansion; it is a reinforcement of our deep belief that viticulture is what truly defines a winery. We have seen firsthand how the specific character of our soils produces amazing, world-class vintages, and we cannot wait to see how this Cabernet Franc expresses our unique piece of Indiana earth in the years to come.
